The city has a population of about 86,000 and a diverse economic base. The city services a trading area of approximately 160,0000. The main industries in Kamloops are Agriculture, forestry/wood products, and mining. The city is framed by rolling uplands of mixed forests & grasslands, and is picturesquely located at the junction of the North and the South Thompson Rivers. Hunting, fishing, and nature activities are within 15 minutes of the city while Sun Peaks Resort nearby boasts some of the best powder skiing in Canada and offers excellent Alpine and Nordic Skiing.
Kamloops has been a ranching community since the nineteenth century, ranching is an integral part of the lifestyle of many residents today. Some of the historic ranches in the region include Quilchena, Douglas Lake Cattle Company, and Harper.
